Headphones have become a staple piece of technology in today’s world. With the rise of online music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, people are listening to music more than ever.
Additionally, they are becoming more and more important in the workplace. More and more companies are banning phone calls and email due to the proliferation of messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
With this ban, workers need a way to stay focused on their work without distraction. Music is a great way to do this!
However, with the rise of headphone users in the workplace, some have complained about how much noise headphones block out. This can be a problem if someone is doing very sensitive work or needs to hear external sounds.
Some headphones are designed with less noise cancelling which can help with this issue.
Tight
When headphones are supposed to fit tight, this means that they are supposed to press against the ears and head. There should be no loose space between the headphone and the ear or head.
This tight fit is important for sound quality. When the headphones fit tight, they create a tighter seal around the ear. This prevents more sound from escaping and keeps more sound in, like the music!
A loose fit will let in more noise from outside, ruining the experience. It can also cause some sounds to be distorted, like when someone is talking really loudly while you are listening to music. You will hear both sounds rather than just the music.
There are some cases where a loose fit is better. If you are just using them for exercise or transportation, then a little bit of movement is okay! You probably do not want to spend a lot of money on expensive headphones if you plan on wearing them while doing physical activity.
Straight down
Most headphones are designed to be worn straight down on your ears. Some over-ear headphones can be worn slightly angled forward, but it is not recommended.
This style is designed to have the headphone cups resting on your ear rather than enclose your ear in the material. This is useful if you want to hear some ambient noise, like if you are walking outside.
Some in-ear headphones are designed to be worn with the wire wrapped around the ear and the headphone protruding out the side of the head. This look is more fashionable and shows off the design of the earbuds. It also provides better sound quality by having a tighter fit in your ear canal.
Whether your headphones are designed to be worn straight down or have a unique fit, make sure they are comfortable and snug so that they do not fall out while you are using them.
Over the ear
Over the ear headphones are the most comfortable pair to wear for a long period of time. They do take a bit more time to fit properly, though!
You will need to find the right size earpiece cover or earpiece cover and inner cushion size first. Then, you will have to find the right inner wire position and fold the headphone cord at the top of the headband correctly.
Make sure the headphones are not too tight or loose at this point, or you will have poor sound quality. Once done, test out your new comfy headphones and enjoy your music for a few hours!
Make sure that when you are fitting them on your head that they are not too tight. If they are too tight, they may cause headaches and discomfort later on. Make them snug enough so that they do not fall off, but not tight enough that they hurt you.
Under the ear
A few people prefer to have their headphones fit under their ear rather than over. This is a slightly less comfortable option, but it looks pretty cool.
Most headphones are designed to have an overlap in the band where it connects to the earpiece. This makes it difficult to attach them under the ear due to the thickness of the band.
However, there are some models that are designed with a thinner band which makes them compatible with this style of fit. Be sure to check if your pair does this!
The other part of the design that makes this harder is the wire. Since it hangs down below your ear, you need some length of wire or you will run out of juice before you get your workout in.
Luckily, most wireless headphones are fairly compatible with this style of fit! Check and make sure your wires do not pull out though.
Headbands should be comfortable but not too tight
Headbands should not squeeze your head or the top of your head. They should be soft and flexible, so that they do not cause headaches or sore spots on your head.
They also should not be too loose, as then they will slide down over time. A good headband should stay in place without needing to pull it tight.
The width of the band should be comfortable for your head size. Too narrow bands may cut into the head, and too wide bands may slide around and fall off. A good fit is important for keeping the band in place.
The material used in the band can vary depending on personal preference. Some people like leather because it is durable. others prefer cotton or other materials for comfort and breathability.
Volume buttons should be within 1 inch of the headset jack
When the volume buttons are far from the headset jack, it can be difficult to adjust the volume. This is especially true if you have a wider phone case.
Many people do not like having the volume buttons on the wire away from the earbuds, but it is not a big deal as long as you have a way to adjust the volume.
Some headphones have additional controls on the in-line controller which can also interfere with adjusting the volume. If this is an issue, then having your phone set to ring mode will help prevent this.
The best place for the volume up and down buttons is either on the in-line controller or on the earpiece itself. Having them on the wire makes it harder to adjust the volume, but it is more convenient. It depends on your preference which one is better.
Microphone location is important for clear sound capture
In addition to the headphones themselves, the microphone location is an important feature to look for when buying new headphones.
Many newer models of headphones have a microphone located in or near the earpiece. This design typically positions the mic near your mouth when you use them to listen to music or take a call.
Some models have a similar design but place the mic near the back of the earpiece, facing your cheek. This design is supposed to capture your voice more clearly when taking a call.
Either design can work well if the quality of sound captured is good. The more advanced technology in one compared to the other does not necessarily make one better than the other. It depends on what type of call you are taking and how much of your face and head you want visible for the person on the other end to see.
Compression gear can affect headphone fit
Compression gear is very popular right now, especially in the fitness world.
People wear compression tights or leggings to help keep warmth in their body, prevent blood from circulating down to the feet, and to help with muscle recovery after a workout.
Similar to wearing workout shoes instead of normal shoes, compression gear requires a little bit of adjustment.
If you are wearing compression leggings or tights, your sneakers may need to be a little bit longer so that you have enough room to move around in them.
The same goes for pulling your headphones over your head- they may get caught on the material if it is tight.
